4 Crucial Factors for Choosing Massage Stones

4 Crucial Factors for Choosing Massage Stones

Find out the great benefits of getting a massage with stones!
Can something constructive come from something destructive? In short, yes. Consider that the Hawaiian Islands, which many have called "paradise on earth," originated from volcanic activity. It is ironic, when you think about it. The temperature of lava from the Hawaiian Islands’ volcanoes can reach temperatures of 1,250 degrees Celsius (2,282 degrees Fahrenheit), destroying anything in its path. Yet that very lava can create some of the world’s most gorgeous landscapes. In addition, massage hot stones often originate from volcanoes. That includes the type of rock known as Basalt. But what exactly makes these stones ideal for therapeutic massages?

Why basalt is best
Basalt rocks are frequently used as massage stones. These smooth, black volcanic rocks become perfect for massage regimens, when heated. Why is that? Basalt rocks can easily absorb heat, making them a perfect tool for professional therapists, when creating a balanced regimen of heat and cold. The tiny grains in Basalt rock are responsible for their smooth appearance.

Due to their originating from hot magma, Basalt rocks are classified as igneous rocks. These massage stones contain a very high amount of magnesium and iron. When volcanoes erupt, Basalt comprises 90% of the material that escapes from the volcano. In its lava form, Basalt is often fragile and soft. Amazingly, flows of Basalt blanket nearly three-fourths of the Earth’s total surface!

After the eruption of a volcano, super hot Basalt spreads quickly, to create a layer of lava that is frequently hundreds of kilometers wide. Besides being prevalent on earth, Basalt is also the most common rock that makes up the seabed. These rocks are also related to the gaps between the Earth’s plates, which form its surface.

One in a million
Considering how commonplace Basalt stones are throughout Earth, it should be a piece of cake to find an ideal one for massage, along a shoreline by a volcano, right? Well, not exactly. You should consider various factors when searching for massage stones to use as part of your massage regimen:
• An important characteristic of a massage stone is its capability to retain heat, and retain it for a long time.
• Massage stone kits are ideal for finding the perfect stones. These kits include stones that have been buffed and treated, creating the perfect stones for massage sessions.
• It is important to use stones of various sizes and shapes. The massage therapist must position the stones on various body parts, so the variety of stones will make the process easier.
• The stones’ weight and density are the most important factors when shopping for your massage hot stones.

Ready to roll
Like a brand new car, a massage stone must be properly cleaned and maintained, to increase its effectiveness. After each session, make sure to sanitize the rocks by completely cleaning them. This process is particularly important when you use oils during the massage, as they could eat away at the stones. You will just need a brush and a soft antibacterial soap used for washing dishes, to clean the stones. Make sure that they are dried completely, to avoid them becoming tarnished. If you used oil during the session, it is also advisable to clean and then air out the basin of the heating machine.

When heating your stones for massage, place a wet towel at the base of the heating machine’s basin, to previous your precious stones from becoming burnt.

While conventional wisdom says that it is wise to avoid volcanoes while they are erupting, what they produce can be truly amazing. Look at Hawaii! In addition, as Basalt lava transforms into Basalt rocks, the vital element for a massage with hot stones, is formed. We can thank Mother Nature for transforming such a destructive event, into a truly magical stone!

Hot Stone Massages to Relax and Reduce Stress

Hot Stone Massages to Relax and Reduce Stress

There are different variations of massage and one among them is the Hot Stone Massage. The heat from the stones effectively relaxes and soothes the tensed muscles prior to the actual application of pressure on the muscles by the therapist. The result is a more enjoyable and calming massage experience.
Receiving a massage treatment from a day spa is an effective way to relax and reduce your stress. Nowadays, massage is made even more appealing by the different variations of massage like the Hot Stone Massage. Hot stones were already of use since the ancient time period. However, it was only now being recognized once again as enhancements in a massage therapy. The classic massage therapy involves using the hands to apply an amount of pressure to certain parts of the body. In the Hot Stone variation, basalt stones of flat and smooth sides are water-heated then placed on the body’s key areas.

The heated stones provide a deep massage and accounts for extra warmth and comfort. The heat from the stones helps the taut muscles to relax and thus prepares the muscles for the actual massage. Compared to a regular massage, the hot stone massage is more intensified as muscles are first warmed up. The blood vessels are expanded when the warm stones are placed on the body areas. Blood is then pushed as well as waste materials in the body. The warmer stones create a calming effect.

There are instances when the client has muscle inflammation and injury so instead of heated basalt stones, cool marble stones are employed. The cool stones assist in the detoxification and healing of the body. The effects of the cold stones in the body include constriction of the blood vessels which in effect stimulates the nervous system and draws blood and wastes along the body.

Because of the relaxation and comfort experience in hot stone massage, many people prefer hot stone massage. This massage variation is perfect for people who feel chilly, for those whose muscles are extremely tensed yet only wish for a light massage. The heat from the stones is enough to make the muscles relax and thus the therapist need not apply extra amount of pressure during the actual massage. There are also various health conditions for which hot stone massage may work well such as back pains, poor circulatory functions, arthritis, osteoarthritis, tension, stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression.

However, if you have skin infections, rashes or open wounds, hot stone massage is not recommended for you. This massage variant is also not suggested for patients who just underwent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatments. Also if you are prone to blood clotting, hot stone massage is not for you. People with heart disease and pregnant women need to consult first with their doctors to ascertain if hot stone massage is applicable.

The hot stone massage is done by first applying an adequate amount of massage oil to the body. Oil ensures the smooth glide of the hot stones. Then the heated stones will then be placed on the key points of the client’s body. When the muscles have relaxed from the heat transferred by the stones to the body, the therapist will then commence the massage via the stones or bare hands. After the massage the stones may be replaced again on the body for a short while. The entire session may last from 60-90 minutes and costs a fee ranging from $50 to $190.

Tips On How To Give A Good Massage

The very first tip on how to give a good massage is to have the person lie on his/her belly on a comfortable surface, such as a bed or a futon. Ensure that the surface has enough room for you to maneuver around and to reach the whole back without putting any strain on your own. Read more on

After having done with the set up, it's time for you to begin the warm up portion of giving a good massage. The massage might take some time, so it is extremely important to begin with a warm up period before proceeding to the actual deeper massage. Stand or kneel by the recipient's side and move both your hands, up and down the side of the spine. Use the tips of the fingers to apply gentle pressure and move in slow circular motions. After having worked on the spinal muscles, it's time to move up to the shoulders. Similarly, work your way in slow circles and give a massage all the way from the shoulders up to the neck.

The warm up session helps the muscles to loosen up and so it is easier to give the massage. The next step in how to give a good massage involves splaying the fingers out along the back and using the pads of the thumb to begin the massage. Similar to what was followed in the warm up period, begin rubbing in circles up and down the spine, but this time, using a firmer pressure. As you are providing the massage, you should know how tender or hard the session is going, by asking the recipient.

Gradually, start giving the massage towards the shoulder blades and work uniformly on the larger muscles between the spines of the shoulder blades and the backbone. Apart from working on the fleshy muscular areas at the top of the shoulders and the mid-back area, also massage the buttocks to loosen tight muscles and fascia (the connective tissue). During the massage session, you may come across hitting some areas of muscle that feels like small knots. These areas have to be worked upon very gently using the pad of the thumb.

What follows now on how to give a good massage is to move all your four fingers uniformly on the muscles on either side of the spine. Now comes the reverse of warm up, i.e., the warm down. As said, it is the reversal of what was performed during the warm up period. Start with decreasing the pressure as you go down and end the massage with a gentle rub with the finger tip and finally with a gentle back rub.

In the above mentioned tips, what was not cited is to create the right atmosphere, so that the massage session becomes more effective. Basically, the room should consists of very few stuffs and must not have any kind of noise. Turn off the lights and use candles instead. Inclusion of a soft mellow music will allow the recipient to enjoy your massage and the tranquil atmosphere.
