The very first tip on how to give a good massage is to have the person lie on his/her belly on a comfortable surface, such as a bed or a futon. After having done with the set up, it's time for you to begin the warm up portion of giving a good massage. The massage might take some time, so it is extremely important to begin with a warm up period before proceeding to the actual deeper massage. Stand or kneel by the recipient's side and move both your hands, up and down the side of the spine. Use the tips of the fingers to apply gentle pressure and move in slow circular motions. After having worked on the spinal muscles, it's time to move up to the shoulders. Similarly, work your way in slow circles and give a massage all the way from the shoulders up to the neck.

The warm up session helps the muscles to loosen up and so it is easier to give the massage. The next step in how to give a good massage involves splaying the fingers out along the back and using the pads of the thumb to begin the massage. Similar to what was followed in the warm up period, begin rubbing in circles up and down the spine, but this time, using a firmer pressure. Gradually, start giving the massage towards the shoulder blades and work uniformly on the larger muscles between the spines of the shoulder blades and the backbone. What follows now on how to give a good massage is to move all your four fingers uniformly on the muscles on either side of the spine. Now comes the reverse of warm up, i.e., the warm down. As said, it is the reversal of what was performed during the warm up period. Start with decreasing the pressure as you go down and end the massage with a gentle rub with the finger tip and finally with a gentle back rub.
