TAME FRIZZY HAIR

TAME FRIZZY HAIR -

'I have thick, black, rough and dry shoulder-length hair. I wash and condition my hair once a week. Though my hair feels silky to the touch when wet, after it dries it gets so frizzy! I am at a loss and just don't know what to do. I constantly keep my hair tied, and wish I could leave it open at times, but I cannot. Please help me!'
- Kausalya, India

Millions of women around the globe suffer from exactly the same problem: frizzy, uncontrollable and untidy locks.

Just as a woman with a low metabolism rate will need to exercise more to lose weight, so also, a woman with frizzy hair will need to put in additional effort if she wants her hair to look good. Simply shampooing and conditioning hair is not adequate 'not if you want to get rid of the frizz.'

Moisture

Hair which is naturally frizzy lacks moisture and protein. Thus, the first step you need to take is to ensure your hair has sufficient moisture.

Apply egg yolk to your hair around half an hour before washing your hair.

Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo, and follow up with a conditioner. Unless you exercise, you need wash your hair only once a week.

Invest in leave-in conditioner. After washing and conditioning, towel dry hair and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the ends of your hair.

Styling your hair

If your hair is frizzy, you will need to spend some time styling it if you want it to look good. Do you want to go straight or curly? Once you have that worked out, apply a generous dollop of gel to damp hair to hold the style and to tame frizzies, and get started.

Curly:

Apply rollers and leave them on until your hair dries completely. Avoid applying heated rollers unless essential. You could also apply sponge rollers at night, and remove them the next morning.

Straight:

If you want to straighten your hair instead, blowdry it straight with the help of a round brush.

Blowdrying all your hair together will be of little use; you need to blowdry small sections at a time.

Clip up the damp, unstyled hair with the help of two clips, and proceed to blowdry small sections, starting from the back of your head.

When the hair is almost dry, reduce the heat of the blow dryer so you don't over-dry it.

Be patient. The entire process may take half an hour. Don't rush it, or you will not get the results you want.

Grow your hair long, as short hair tends to curl faster. If your hair is long, due to the weight, the curls open up. Your hair would be far easier to blowdry, and it will stay straight longer.

Oil

Safflower oil is excellent for frizzy hair. When your hair is completely dry, after styling it, apply 2-3 drops of safflower oil to your palms and rub them together. Apply this oil to the ends of your hair. Use more oil for longer hair, but ensure that the amount you apply is very little, so your hair does not look sticky. Leave this oil on in your hair. This will help tame the frizzes.

Chemical Treatments

You could consider going in for a perm, so your frizzes get converted into glossy curls. If you long for straight hair, you could also opt for a straightening treatment, though a perm is less harsh than chemical straightening.

Whether you decide to perm or straighten your hair, you cannot afford to neglect it after the treatment as it could get damaged. But as long as you take care of your hair, oil it regularly, wash it gently and follow up with a conditioner, there should be no problem even after getting a chemical treatment done. Similarly, avoid going in for two chemical treatments together. If you must perm or straighten your hair, do not highlight it and vice versa.

Minimal Fuss

If you would rather not blowdry or style your hair, but simply want your frizzes to be manageable, here's what you could do:

  1. Start growing your hair long.
  2. After shampooing and conditioning, apply a few drops of oil to your damp hair.
  3. Apply a generous amount of gel to your hair.
  4. Brush your hair well, and then plait it.
  5. When dry, open up the plait, and apply a little more gel to the ends of the hair, to tame any frizzes.
The result? Your hair may not look silky, but it will not be spreading out in all directions. The 'bushy' effect will be dramatically reduced, and your hair will look wavy and in control.

YOUR HAIR LOSS CAN BE ALOPECIA -

YOUR HAIR LOSS CAN BE ALOPECIA -

You hair fall can be a sign of an acute hair problem called Alopecia. Find out more about Alopecia, its types, cause, symptoms and treatment.

Rina's life changed the day she started loosing her hair. Each time she combed her hair she lost many strands. She soon visited her family doctor. Despite long term medication she continued losing hair. Finally she visited a well-known dermatologist and she found out that she was suffering from Alopecia. She had to bear pitiful glances of onlookers and sometimes even rude remarks. Her doctor assured her that her hair fall was curable but it would take some time. At that time what she needed the most was support from her family& friends and of course lot of hope.

Alopecia is a term associated with hair loss and baldness. Alopecia is medical term for acute hair loss from the scalp or the body. In severe case of Alopecia one loses hair from head to toe. Although this seems scary the condition is possible to control it.

Types of Alopecia

Hair loss takes place mostly because of ageing, hormonal imbalance or as a natural process to allow the new growth. Alopecia can lead to absence of hair from skin area also. The hair loss could occur in patches or all over. Alopecia is divided into several types which make treating alopecia more specific.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is a condition where hair loss occurs in patches. These patches are totally smooth and round in shape. Alopecia Areata takes place when your immune system attacks your hair follicles. Hair follicles are the part of the skin from where hair grows. This type of Alopecia is common among youngsters. Alopecia Areata is hereditary. There are more chances of contracting Alopecia Areata if a close family member is suffering from it.

Alopecia Totalis

Alopecia Totalis is an autoimmune disorder. Total hair loss is the symptom of this type of Alopecia. A person suffering from Alopecia Totalis looses all his scalp hair resulting in total baldness.

Alopecia Universalis

Alopecia Universalis can occur at any age. Alopecia Universalis is the condition where one loses all body hair including eyelashes, eyebrows and hair on the scalp. It is an extreme state in all types of Alopecia. There can be an absence of entire body hair including the pubic hair since birth in the case of Alopecia Universalis.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic Alopecia is also referred to as male pattern baldness. There can be a partial or a complete baldness in this situation. This type of hair loss is associated with imbalance of hormones called androgens that play important role in both genders related to hair growth and sex drive.

Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia is a gradual hair loss. Pulling your hair back in tight pony tail, pigtail or braid can put pressure on hair follicles causing hair loss. Hair styles that tighten the hair can cause breaking of hair. Frequent hair treatments that uses chemicals such as ironing and straightening can also lead to Traction Alopecia.

Causes of Alopecia

Emotional or psychological stress, depressions, crash dieting, too tightly pulled hair styles are some of the common causes of hair loss. Side effects of medications such as oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, medication for heart ailments and blood pressure could cause Alopecia. Other causes of extreme hair loss can be fungal infections, overactive or under active thyroid gland, prolonged fever, child birth and pregnancy.

Common symptoms of Alopecia

If traced earlier there is a scope to cure a hair loss completely. One needs to understand the common symptoms of the hair loss to prevent it. Following listed are the symptoms of Alopecia. If you are experiencing these symptoms immediately talk to your family doctor.

  • Thinning of hair

  • Balding scalp

  • Forming of round visible patches of hair loss

  • Itching of the scalp

  • Having brittle fingernails and toenails

  • Facing rapid hair loss

  • Experiencing gradual shedding of hair

Prevention and Cure of Alopecia

Alopecia can be diagnosed by testing a sample of your scalp skin or by carrying out a blood test. Analysing samples of hair can also identify the problem. A thorough study of your diet pattern, family medical history and hair care regime can detect the acuteness of hair loss.

A dermatologist will recommend a personalised treatment for alopecia. He or she may prescribe drugs to correct hormonal imbalance or any deficiencies. Hair transplants, hair weaving, wigs and head gears are also options to live with incurable hair loss.

Prevention of hair loss is possible. Leading a stress-free lifestyle, intake of balanced and proper food, staying away from chemically treated hair treatments by learning to love you natural hair and following simple hair care tips will surely prevent hair loss.

There is definitely hope for Alopecia sufferers. Being patient and having a positive attitude will help a lot. A person suffering from Alopecia undergoes lot of emotional turmoil and needs to address it. Along with support from loved ones seeking professional help to control the mental stress is of utmost importance. Keep in mind that 'One can lead a normal life with Alopecia'.

HIGHER, BABY!

HIGHER, BABY! -

Just adding a little height to the top of your hair can make a world of difference to your hairstyle. However, this is easier said than done. True, a little gel serves the purpose, but not for long.

If you're more than just a little terrified of turning your sleek mane into a wild birds nest in the name of fashion, take heart. You dont have to go all the way! All were trying to do is to add a little height to your hair.

GET THE LOOK

To achieve a subtle but higher than usual do, just style your hair as normal and then comb the front section of your hair forward and either tie it up or clip it together, so that's it's separated from the rest of your hair. You are now ready to tease or backcomb your hair.

Many women make the mistake of backcombing the entire front section and then lightly brushing it to neaten it up. What you are doing then is untangling the knots you had created by backcombing, defeating the purpose. Your hair then falls flat much faster. You should, therefore, tease the section just behind the front of your hair, which is why it makes sense to start by clipping the front section.

Gently tease the hair left on top of your crown with a small brush or comb. Teasing hair gives you instant volume. After you've brushed it in the wrong direction, it should look like a little ball of hair is sitting on top of your head.

Sprtiz this hairball with a bit of hair spray, or apply gel before backcombing so it stays put.

Now take the front section of hair (which you initially separated) and smooth it over the top of your head to cover the back combed section. Voila! A perfectly coiffed style achieved in minutes. You could leave your hair open, or pin it up into an elegant bun.

If you change your mind and decide big hair is just not for you, just brush through the hairball, untangling it slowly and carefully and youre back to your basic flat style within moments.

On the other hand if you love the look and want to go even bigger and better, just use more of everything. More hair from the crown of your head to back-comb, more hair pins, more gel and hairspray or just go bananas and back-comb your entire head of hair. Caution: birds may mistake your head for a nest.

This may not work well if your hair is too fine, and a couple of inches above the crown is probably about the biggest your hair will get. It helps if you gel your hair a day earlier and then gel it again before styling it.

Whatever you do, dont wash your hair the day you want to style it if you want this look.

For a looser look with more movement, simply use a few rollers at the top of the head, secure with styling gel to set the style and youre done. If you have the time, go in for sponge rollers as these are the gentlest on hair. Metal rollers are the harshest, so if you must use heated rollers, invest in non-metal ones.

CURLY LOCKS -

CURLY LOCKS -

Your head is full of curls that rise like the living dead and seem to have a mind of their own. You've tried everything from straightening your hair to blowdrying it till it's fried, but it's still the same frizzy mess you started out with. What should one do?

First of all, there's good news for curly heads. Ringlets are back with a rage. So instead of burning out your hair with frustrating attempts to straighten it, here's what you can do to control those curls.

Curl Care

Getting curly hair to behave begins in the shower. Wash your hair every third day. On days you are not washing your hair, wet it and apply conditioner. Don't wash your hair everyday if you have curly hair, even if you are using a mild shampoo that claims it is suitable enough for daily use. Of all hair types, curly hair is the driest and most brittle.

Always follow up with a conditioner. Concentrate conditioner on ends, which are the most dry, and rinse out. Towel dry hair and apply a leave-in conditioner. If you don't have any, moisturising lotion is a good substitute! It keeps the frizz at bay and controls the curls. You could also apply a couple of drops of oil to your hair when wet. Remember, when towel drying frizzy hair, pat it down, don't
ruffle it.

For a quick fix for damaged, weak, dull or dry hair, work in a good healthy dose of conditioner on wet hair and expose it to steam for 15 minutes. Then lightly shampoo and rinse.

Curly heads need to apply more styling products, conditioners and oils to control their mane. This leads to build up. Once a month mix an equal amount of baking soda with your shampoo and wash your hair. This removes build up and residue and leaves your hair squeaky clean.

Comb your hair with a wide toothed comb when it's damp and not dripping wet as wet hair breaks easily, especially if it is tangled. Apply a good conditioner and using a wide tooth comb start from the ends. Take as much time as is necessary to avoid stretching or breaking your hair. Never comb curly hair when it is dry and never, ever brush your curls. They'll just open up into frizzes.

When blow drying your hair, use a diffuser attachment. Don't dry it completely; leave it slightly damp or you run the risk of over-drying your hair.

Perfecting the Curl

If you're letting your hair dry naturally, try this: Apply gel or leave-in conditioner to towel dried hair and create curls by twisting locks of hair around your fingers or by scrunching your hair. Or twist sections and clip them up with butterfly clips. Once dry, take them down. Loosen the curls with your fingers.

Wash your hair at night, apply gel or mousse and braid it. The next morning, open out your braids and finger comb your hair for lovely, natural curls.

Fed up with hair that zooms out at the sides as if you've been electrocuted? Pull your hair taut and secure it into a ponytail when it's drying. This way your hair will tend to fall down instead of spreading out.

Frizz Busters

If you tie up your hair in a silk, satin or velvet scarf at night, it will kill some of the frizz.

If you catch a case of the frizzies, simply wet your hair. Your mane needs to be kept megamoisturised to fight frizz.

So there you have it. In a world of people with flat, limpy hair that just hangs down, your curls set you apart. Just one out of twenty have curly hair, so count yourself lucky and chuck those straightening irons where they belong. In the bin.

ESSENTIALS FOR FALLING HAIR

ESSENTIALS FOR FALLING HAIR - by Editor

Does your hair fall often Arm yourself with these tools to combat hair fall.

Wide-toothed comb

  • Get yourself a wide-toothed comb. This is probably one of the most important yet underutilized of all hair tools. A wide-toothed comb helps you distribute conditioner evenly all over your hair while shampooing and conditioning. In addition, it also helps get rid of knots smoothly.

  • The best time to get rid of knots is during conditioning. Apply conditioner and run a wide toothed comb gently through your hair.

  • While untangling dry hair, do so in sections. Take one section at a time, and first, untangle the ends of your hair. Do so slowly, and don't pull unless you want your hair to fall out in clumps or break.

  • Don't wait for the last minute before detangling your hair. Every night, while sitting in front of the television, run a wide toothed comb gently through your hair, until you have untangled it completely. Do this every night, and you will notice that your hair remains free from tangles.

    Leave-in conditioner
Dry hair tends to tangle easily, and, needless to say, causes it to break. Make sure your hair is never devoid of moisture by always keeping a bottle of leave-in conditioner handy. The next time you feel your hair is dry and rough to the touch, simply rub a dollop of leave-in conditioner between your palms, and apply it to your hair. Comb through with your wide toothed comb. Your hair will be instantly rejuvenated and moisturized. Gradually, the texture will also improve. This is a must if you blow dry your hair regularly, or if it is chemically treated. Such hair constantly craves moisture, so get yourself a bottle of leave-in conditioner.

    Oil
Olive, almond and coconut oils are all excellent for the hair. While you could apply oil as an alternative to leave-in conditioner, oil tends to make your hair sticky, and you cannot style your hair well after applying oil. Your only alternative would then be to tie up your hair. For better results with oil, apply just a few drops immediately after washing your hair, when your hair is still dripping wet. Oil doesn't penetrate the strands as easily as leave-in conditioner does though. Nothing beats a hot oil massage followed by a steam treatment, as the steam helps the oil penetrate the hair strands, strengthening them and curtailing hair fall.

    Egg
Egg is great for the hair - there are no two ways about it! True, it causes a tremendous stink in the bathroom, and your hair may let off an 'eggy' smell, but the results are instantaneous and worth it! Egg strengthens your hair almost immediately, and the egg yolk leaves your hair shining. Whip an egg with two tablespoons of olive oil and apply it to your hair. Wash off after half an hour. Make sure you wash off with cold water though, or the egg will start cooking in your hair, and would be harder to take off! Use a scented shampoo to counter the smell of egg in your hair, and follow up with a leave-in conditioner. Do this for a month, and you will be amazed by the change in your hair texture and the reduction in hair fall
