Spa treatments are the services that a spa provides. The most popular spa treatment in the United States and a good place to start is massage. It has been around for thousands of years and has a number of health benefits.

Other popular spa treatments include facials and body treatments like salt glows and body wraps.

Most spas have a nail salon offering spa manicures and spa pedicures . Spas with salons offer hair cutting and styling services.

Once you've tried the basic spa treatments, you might want to branch out to different types of massage like Thai massage , hot stone massage or reflexology. You should talk to your esthetician about what facial services or body treatments would be most appropriate for your skin type.

Remember, the most important thing you can do to enjoy your trip to the spa is arrive at least 15 minutes before your treatment is scheduled to begin. That way you can check in, change into your robe, and start to relax. If the spa has facilities like a sauna, steam bath, or hot tub, arrive even earlier.

5 Common Spa Treatments Explained

5 Common Spa Treatments Explained

By , About.com Guide

Whether you're looking to book a spa treatment for yourself or you're looking for the perfect gift for your wife or friend, many times you don't know what you're going to get when you book your appointment.

Everyone deserves a spa treatment, but prices can keep many away. My tip is to find your local Beauty School and let the students practice on you. You'll get an amazing deal, and because they are being graded, they'll give you fantastic treatment.

Here are five common spa treatments explained so you know exactly what you're going to get when you book your appointment.

1. Massage

Most everyone knows what a massage is, but many people aren't quite sure about the details. Do you get undressed or leave on your under clothes? Will you have a man or woman masseuse? These are common concerns which prevent many people from having an easily accessible (and in my opinion, mandatory) spa treatment. As for under clothes, you are free to do what you are comfortable with, on or off. If you have a preference in gender, just ask when you book!

If you book a 30 minute massage, the masseuse will spend most of the time on a specific area such as your back. To get the real experience, you need at least a 1 hour massage. You'll get a full head to toe massage. My last masseuse even massaged my ears.

2. Body Wrap

A body wrap usually starts with an slight exfoliation of your skin and a brief massage to apply your body mask. Wraps are given as a detox treatment for your skin. You may have mud, algae or one of many other agents rubbed onto your skin, and then you'll be wrapped tight so your body sweats out your impurities. If you don't mind being wrapped up tight like a mummy, you'll love the relaxing benefit of a wrap.

Once wrapped, you'll get to relax for about 15-20 minutes before you are unwrapped. Once unwrapped, you'll get a quick shower either by a hand held hose, a stand up shower in the room or a Vichy shower which is a shower while lying down. Add in an application of moisturizer and you're left feeling completely relaxed.

3. Hot Stone

You'll enjoy a Hot Stone spa treatment if you have a specific ailment, such as a sore back or fatigued muscles in general. Rocks heated by warm water, are covered with essential oils and placed in specific areas on your body. These rocks give pressure to pressure points on your body to relax them further. Your technician may rotate from hot to cool rocks depending on your complaints.

Hot Stone treatments are usually combined with a massage to give your muscles the attention they need. This is a great pick for an athlete.

4. Body Scrub

Exfoliation is essential for glowing skin. A body scrub gives you a complete body exfoliation using a multitude of different ingredients. Two commonly used products to exfoliate are sugar and salt, but your spa treatment could include a combination of ingredients to exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating not only removes the dead layer of skin, it also boosts your circulation.

You'll lie on a bed while your therapist gently rubs your skin with the exfoliating product. You'll be comfortable; they will make sure their pressure is perfect for you. They will exfoliate both sides of your body, and you'll be covered with a towel. After you are rinsed clean, they will complete the treatment with a hydrating moisturizer. Your skin will glow.

5. Facial

You'll have a big choice when you book your facial. Usually the most extensive on the menu is the list of facials. From facials for acne to anti-aging to face brightening facials using fresh fruit and vegetable ingredients; there is a facial for your skin. The best thing is to touch base with an an esthetician first and talk to them about your skin type. They'll help you decide what's best for you. If you're giving this as a gift, give a general spa gift certificate and let them decide.

You'll start with a consultation so your esthetician can examine your skin. She will cleanse, exfoliate or add a mask, massage and moisturize your face while you lay back and relax. You'll likely get a hand massage as well; it's a treat for any face.

DIY Facial Massage

DIY Facial Massage

1. You will need a massage oil that's suitable for your skin type. There is a recipe for a facial massage oil below. Half (2.5 ml) to one teaspoon (5 ml) of oil should be enough for a 5-minute facial massage.

2. Beginning at the base of the throat, use gentle upward and outward strokes, progressing with sliding movements along your jawline to the base of your ears, then circular motions over your cheeks and ears and around your lips.

3. Lightly tap around the eyes with the pads of your fingers, beginning at the outer edge and working inward.

4. Next, beginning at the center of your forehead, use upward strokes to work your way outward with each hand, ending with circular strokes over your temples.

5. Repeat the entire procedure up to 5 times. No need to rinse as the oil should be completely absorbed into your skin.

A 4-Minute Massage Routine

A 4-Minute Massage Routine

You can follow this routine after removing make-up using carrier oil or while applying your moisturizing cream. Once you have memorized the routine if should take no more than three to four minutes, so try to do it ever day. If you have a specific area that you need to concentrate on, incorporate one of the massages from the routine.

Pour just under a teaspoon of oil into one hand, rub it into both hands and apply the oil to your neck and face in long, upward and outward sweeping movements. Apply it very sparingly around your eyes, where the skin is most delicate, using the ring finger of both hands.

Using alternate hands, slide up your neck form the base to your jaw bone, turning the hands as necessary and working lightly over your windpipe. Cover your whole neck form ear to ear.

Using the first and middle fingers of each hand, slide firmly along your jaw line from your chin to the front of your ears. Your index finger should be on top of your jaw and the middle finger underneath.

With your fingers together and hands pointing up to your brow, holding the fingers straight, press firmly with the edge of your hands either side of your nose. Hold for three to four seconds. Repeat.

Release the pressure slightly and, rolling your hands on to your cheeks, slide your hands outwards with your index fingers stopping in front of your ears and apply a firm pressure. Hold for three to four seconds. Repeat.

With your fingers held in loose fists underneath your chin slide both thumbs upwards symmetrically around the corners of your mouth, in under your nose, around your nostrils and lightly off over the tip of your nose.

With the middle and ring fingers of each hand, starting at the inner corners of your eyebrows, slide firmly outwards over your eyebrows and using your ring finger only, trace very lightly inwards underneath your eyes.

With the ring finger of each hand, slide lightly outwards over your closed eyelids and then lightly underneath each eye.

With your fingers together and the index fingers leading the way, alternately smooth your hands up to the hairline in a firm lifting movement, starting between the eyebrows and finishing at the hairline.

Close your eyes and, with the fingers together and using the whole of both hands slightly cupped to produce a gentle suction, apply a firm pressure to the face, holding for a second before releasing. Then, moving the hands outwards from the nose towards the ears, cover the whole face, moving the hands up and down to cover the area between the chin and hairline.

With your fingers together and using the whole of the hand, apply pressure with the right hand to the left side of the neck, working from the base of the neck to the jaw but avoiding the windpipe. Repeat with the left hand, applying pressure to the right side of the neck.

Repairs Aging Skin

Repairs Aging Skin
As we age, our bodies are shifting hormones and this has an effect on our skin. We can repair, rejuvenate, and add to the skin's supple, youthful glow. Exotic Oils is imbued with nature’s own Croton Lechleri tree sap, also known as Sangre de Drago. This extraordinary sap from the Amazonian rainforest contains 90% proanthocyandins (OPCs) which are the most potent class of anti-oxidant compounds. In addition, studies have shown the presence of taspines in Sangre de Drago, unique nutrients that stimulate the migration of the fibroblast cells responsible for tissue regeneration and the production of collagen and elastin. Sangre de Drago activates new growth of healthy skin cells and is best known in the Rainforest as the ‘wound healer’. This tree sap actually rejuvenates the tissue so quickly that deep wounds heal without any trace of a scar.

Other key ingredients in Exotic Oils is the extract of Sea Buckthorn Berry, a marvelously rich source of beta-carotene (more potent than carrots) and a rich source of carotenoids and pro-vitamin A and an excellent source of oleic fatty acids. Argan Oil has long been used by the French in their most luxurious skin care. Argan oil has the richest natural vitamin E content of all plant oils in the world. Essential fatty acids protect cellular integrity and affect cell fluidity, helping to prevent loss of moisture from the skin. They play a vital role in the formation of prostaglandin, a natural anti-inflammatory that reduces pain, swelling and inflammation, while stimulating blood circulation.

All of these compounds in Exotic Oils support the production of new collagen and elastin to make the skin supple, youthful and vibrant in its appearance.

Protects Normal Skin

Protects Normal Skin
No matter what the skin type, gender or ethnicity of our skin, we are all affected by free radicals caused by environmental toxins, stress, and the sun’s UV rays. Free radicals age and damage the skin, and the best protection is in nature’s best, skin-soluble anti-oxidants which make up the formula of Exotic Oils.
