Very Short Hair Styles

Very Short Hair Styles

Thinking about going with a very short hair style? It’s a bold move, especially if your hair is currently styled with a medium or long cut. If your hair is already short (above the shoulders), the change is less of a concern, but still warrants serious consideration. Here are some ideas and tips to avoid major regrets after you take the plunge.

You have several options in choosing an ultra short hair style. It depends on your personality, career, and two very important physical factors: your type of hair and your facial features. If you’re a young person with an outgoing and daring personality, you might consider a very short hair style with spikes. You’ll set yourself apart and, no doubt, get lots of admiring (and maybe even some disapproving) looks from others. But hey – attention is a good thing, right? This is not a very good hair style for the timid, and it’s a bad choice for serious professional women in corporate settings. Otherwise, have some fun and go for it!

An excellent choice in very short styles is the extreme pixie cut. It’s actually a very versatile hair style. Women of all ages can wear it in many different settings, from professional to school to casual, everyday occasions. Like all extremely short haircuts, it does take regular trimming and a fair amount of preparation time on a daily basis, but it’s still considerably easier to manage than most other styles.

An interesting look that you don’t see often is this boyish hair style. The hair is cut very short in the back, but left longer in front, with lots of choppy bangs hanging low on the forehead. It is probably the easiest of all the super short styles to manage, which is a huge plus. However, it is not appropriate in most business settings.

Clearly, the most extreme of all the very short hair styles is the buzz cut. Talk about a low maintenance hair style! Can it even be considered a “style” at all? Maybe not. Celebrities like Sinead O’Connor in the 80′s and Britney Spears and Natalie Portman more recently have made big news getting their locks shorn to the scalp. What do all of these stars have in common? They all have strikingly beautiful faces.

And that leads to some important tips when thinking about getting any of these very short hair styles…

* If you have any facial features you don’t like (large nose, thin lips, wrinkles, crow’s feet, blemishes), understand that really short hair will make them stand out even more. Get with a bluntly honest stylist and take his/her advice seriously before you go under the scissor blades.
* Some ultra short styles work better with certain types of hair. If you have very thin hair, for example, the spiked look is going to be a real daily headache as you try to maintain it. On the other hand, the boyish cut shown above is a piece of cake with thinner hair.
* As mentioned previously, take your lifestyle and responsibilities into consideration before going with an extremely short hair style. Generally speaking, the younger you are, the less it matters.
* Finally, consider playing it a bit more conservatively and testing the waters with a longer version first. Instead of the extreme pixie, go with a more traditional pixie hair cut first. The simple truth is that, with all of the very short hair styles, you’ll be stuck with it for as long as it takes to grow out. Don’t make a snap decision. Talk to friends who you know will be honest with you and, most importantly, get advice from a trusted and experienced hair stylist.
