The great thing about the babies is that their noses get cleared up by itself and no special care is required for this purpose. If your baby is having any discharge from the nose, you should clean it only from the outside. But, you should resist from using cotton balls or your fingernail for trying to remove the discharge from inside the nostril. Such an effort might cause to the baby’s nasal membrane.

Newborns often have wheezy breathing because their nasal passages are very narrow. Frequent sneezing would help you baby to clear up any blockages in the baby’s nasal cavity.

For the first three months, a baby can breathe only through the nose. In case, there is any blockage in the nasal passage, babies cry to breathe air. Therefore, congestion of nose could disrupt the baby’s feeding and sleeping which might affect the baby’s temperament. Therefore, in case of any nasal blockage or congestion, you should try to clear it so that the baby would be feeling as comfortable as possible.

Catching a cold could make your baby feel miserable, but it does not pose any great threat towards the baby’s health. But, you should give proper attention to your baby so that such an infection does not lead to more serious health conditions like ear infection, influenza or pneumonia.

In case, your baby is having a cold or having nasal congestion, then what should you do? It is true there is no cure for the common cold. But, you can take some simple steps that are enumerated below which could make your baby feel comfortable. Such steps would also ensure that such ailment does not turn into something much more serious.

  • Ensure that baby gets proper rest
  • Provide your baby extra fluids in the form of water or extra breast feed, so that the lost fluids get replaced
  • You could use saline water to clean the baby’s nose

Babies have immature immune system in the first year of their life. They may get four to ten colds in their first year. Your baby might catch cold by coming in contact with virus by putting contaminated toys in their mouth.

Indoor heating during winter makes the baby’s nasal passage dry, which might make your baby more vulnerable to catch a cold. These simple tips would help you to take proper care of your baby’s nose.
