Medieval hairstyles
For a woman, back in medieval times also known as the dark ages, there were limitations on showing ones hair. Perhaps because there was a strong religious influence, fear of disease and witchcraft loomed large hence it was a good idea to appear moderate and virtuous at all times. The hair that peeked out from the edges of a headdress was always well groomed. Braided hair is a signature look of the medieval era and medieval hairstyles were fashioned close to the head. The ‘commoners’ as they were called, may have let their hang loose but it was frowned upon to show more hair in public. Fortunately we’ve come a long way since then and in this day and age, anyone who wants to flaunt a medieval hairstyle can do so without fear of showing too much or too little hair. Now it’s simply a hairstyle back then it was a way of life. The three strand braid, the four strand braid, the twist and cross and the weaving styles were four highly popular looks of medieval days. Long and curly hair was most commonly seen during this period and even short hair was curled up on the sides and back of the head. Medieval hairstyles frequently took on interesting shapes such as castle towers or hearts, although this isn’t a look one will see on the streets of today, it might be popular on a fashion show runway.
