Hairstylist Eric Alt with priceless advice you should follow

Hairstylist Eric Alt with priceless advice you should follow

New Jersey’s own Eric Alt, of Eric Alt Salons, seems to be at the epicenter of the New Jersey big hair movement. After all, he just happens to be the stylist for one of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. He has also worked on America’s Next Top Model. Hairstylesdesign.com interviewed this creative hairstylist and colorist so he could share great advice with readers around the globe.
HSD: In your professional opinion, what hairstyle trend/s do you see for this coming fall, 2010?

EA: Hair this fall seems to be moving toward an exciting new take on a retro look….lots of loose fluffy hair with a glam Debbie Harry inspired edge. Lots of texture at every length. Do not be afraid to introduce layers into your haircut this fall. Ponytails are loose textural and side swept like the ones I helped create at the Fall 2010 DKNY show. When it comes to wearing your hair up, think bombshell 1960s bouffants inspired by Brigitte Bardot. Clients seem to really love it when I experiment with different poufy looks and who knows, you may start a trend of your own.

HSD: When speaking about hair height, most women are afraid to go TOO big on the top, what is the perfect height of hair and give examples if possible.
EA: Hair height is a very personal decision. There is no right or wrong. You must do what feels right to you and makes you feel sexy, whether it be a little bump or a fierce bouffant. I feel that Beyonce always does it right. She is the queen of big hair whether it is curly or straight. . Jessica Biel and Angelina Jolie have mastered the more subtle bump while Drew Barrymore takes it to a new level with her big hair looks. For some people its Amy Winehouse all the way.

HSD: What products would you personally recommend to achieve this look?

EA: I love to use a dry shampoo (hair powder) to create this look it gives hair a gritty lived in feel. This is great for giving support for teasing and maintaining height. Alt. Purify Dry Shampoo is my personal favorite that was created exactly for these kinds of looks.

HSD: Frizziness tends to be a big deal for curly hair in the warmer weather, what products should one use to combat that problem?

EA: When it comes to frizzy hair, moisture is key. You always want to stay away from alcohol or drying products. A curl cream or light oil are your best bet. It is also important that you don’t over dry curly hair, air-drying is best. Apply a liberal amount to damp hair and being sure to get your product well distributed through ends. Always keep in mind that moisture begins with the shampoo and conditioner you are using. Always look for a moisturizing formula NOT clarifying, as this will strip natural oils from your hair. Our Alt. Botanica Shampoo and Conditioners are infused with ARGAN oil for moisture. We also created an Alt. Loops Curl Cream to add moisture and light hold to curly hair.

Seen directly above, another amazing product: SUSTAIN Working Spray- a flexible fixative that resists humidity.

HSD: Being that you are a Creative hairstylist and colorist, many people believe one should go lighter in the summer season; do you stand by this theory?

EA: Its funny that you should ask this question because I am not a 100% believer in that theory. When people spend a lot of time in the sun, clearly their skin tone changes. In my opinion there is nothing worse than a very tan woman with bright blond hair. It just looks off and un-natural. Now, if you take that same person with the same skin tone and lowlight that blond with earthy bronzy tones –BAM- you have a bronze goddess a-la Jennifer Lopez. In winter when skin tone is pale and you add cool blonde earth tones to hair you have a gorgeous sexy Nordic blonde.

HSD: Would you say you think out of the box or are more of a traditionalist in your styling?

EA: I consider myself to be more classic in style. I love the runway looks of Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, and Valentino. I feel that my job is to make women look BEAUTIFUL not crazy, though I do see the need for some fun sometimes. I love to take hair color and make a crisp, clean, classic, rich statement.

HSD: What popular hair color do you see for fall?

EA: When I was working for Wella, coloring hair on the 2010 DKNY fall runway show, I got a real feel for what the trend is for fall. Hair color should consist of rich colors found in nature. Think of a bed of river stones with beautiful rich browns and golds with very cool beige tones. Also, colors seen in wood such as warm honey tones with chocolate streaks and dense bordeaux browns. I love fall hair color and feel it is by far the most fun and creative.

HSD: What inspired you to create your own products and tell us a bit about them?

EA: I really felt a need for a delicious eco-friendly and user-friendly product line. I love to create art and want to give clients the tools to take home what they need to do that. I also wanted clients to feel like when they wash their hair that they are having an in- home aromatherapy experience. I love to combine textures and create a unique styling experience. When I go to the store and see all of the brands that are out there, I realize that we need to take styling products to another level by adding moisturizers and ingredients that actually help improve the texture of hair while being functional.

HSD: Let us talk about the best selling or most talked about products in the line and why they are so popular?

EA: Our 2 top selling products are completely opposite to each other. Silken+ (PLUS,) a creamy smoothing elixir with shine crystals, it acts like a leave-in conditioner with smoothing properties. It is loaded with up filters to protect hair color from the suns harmful rays, therefore extending the life of the hair color. Purify Dry Shampoo is an awesome product for anybody who does not want to wash his or her hair every day. You spray this translucent powder into hair and it absorbs oil buildup and gives you that fresh just washed feeling. Purify Hair Powder can also be used to create body and lift for up dos reminiscent of sexy Victoria Secret style hair.

HSD: Do you work on celebrity / model hair? If so, who?

EA: I have worked with countless models and celebs in NYC. I am currently working with Danielle Staub of Bravos The Real Housewives of New Jersey and the international superstar Johnny Weir who, among many other projects, stars in his own reality series Be Good Johnny Weir on The Sundance Channel.

And so you have it! Professional hairstylist Eric Alt shares his priceless advice and top products which are available at AltHairProducts.com
