Today’s generation may not be as familiar with the term “Rockabilly” as was the society in the late 1930’s, 1940’s and early 1950’s. Thanks to styles reemerging, bold individuals who weren’t even around in that period, are bringing it back to the streets. Rock’n’Roll wasn’t the only good thing to come out of this earlier epoch. Hairstyles were huge, literally and figuratively and made a signature statement to anyone cool enough to wear them. It’s unlikely anyone will rock a rockabilly hairstyle without actually loving the era it derived from. While it’s one thing to love the music, the cars and lifestyle, it’s another to dress the part and become an element of that period. Rockabilly in many ways brings people back to the days of rock and roll and is somewhat of a sub-culture movement where people who favor the styles and music of that era can relate to one another by simply dressing of the time and sporting the hairstyles.
If you’re still wondering what this funktified look involves, picture a man with his hair cut short on the sides and a slightly longer back. Now imagine a sufficient length on top and in front to create the upswept “pompadour”. Look at John Travolta in Greece sporting his ‘greecer’ hairstyle. Cool, confident and under control, that’s the perfect personality trait for a hairstyle like this. Another possibility is the flattop. This look cut the top of the man’s hair to approximately one inch and it was styled with pomade or wax to give spiking ends.

Women’s rockabilly styles are more wide-ranging, but generally follow two looks: the medium length layered style where the hair is longer at the top of the head, approximately 5-6 inches and shorter at the sides -3-4 inches- mid-length at the crown-4-5 inches-with the longest section usually at the nape of the neck. The key to giving this style authenticity, is always keeping it curly. Curls were a big part of this era and were often over exaggerated using big curlers.
Bettie Page, the 1940s and 1950s pin-up model was a huge trend setter in the rockabilly era. It was a longer style created with blunt cut bangs across the forehead. Again, this pin-up girl didn’t flaunt pin straight hair; instead, she wore her hairstyle with soft waves for extra body leaving her fringe smooth and straight. From these basic hairstyles, many other rockabilly hairstyles were influenced and today, many variations can be seen in different lengths.

Medieval hairstyles frequently took on interesting shapes such as castle towers or hearts, although this isn’t a look one will see on the streets of today, it might be popular on a fashion show runway.

One’s natural hair color isn’t always 1 shade all over. Lighter and darker hues reflect and deflect light and hair colors change as we step in the sun or use certain products. Highlights seem to be the normal thing to get every summer...go lighter with the warmer weather they say. Who are they, anyway? While red is not a color everyone is comfortable becoming, it IS a color everyone notices. If you want to be one single shade of hair color AND still get lots of attention, go red.

Dark ebony black is gorgeous and has of late, become popular on fairer skinned complexions where it was once known to be too dark. Going jet black is a drastic change but you will be sure of one thing-highlights be gone!

This solid dark brown is not quite as dark as black but nearly. It hides any signs of previous color or highlights without being as drastic as black.

Not many highlights on this head because the entire look is extremely light to begin with. There will always be a few strands darker or lighter on blonder tresses but dying it one solid color will bring it back to a more even tone allover.

Johanna Cree Brown, that’s who! I enjoy these hairstyles because while they express the seriousness of Joanna’s art as a stylist, they are designs that would state not to take oneself TOO seriously. Life is too short! Wear your hair in a hair bow why don’t cha! While everyone is too busy getting bobs, pixies and growing hair out from a lack of hairstyle creativeness, Johanna’s coming up with fun new looks that serve to inspire fellow stylists, photographers and the everyday person who is just too darn scared to try something new. Picture 1 on TOP LEFT: This forward graduated haircut has disconnected sections underneath the parting. The top section of the hair was cut into with thinning scissors to create a veil. The look was blow dried with Trevor Sorbie Salon Exclusive Prep Hair, using a Denman brush and styled on the opposite side to the haircut to let the veiled section fall loose in front of the face. The look was finished with Trevor Sorbie Salon Exclusive Shine Spray.

Picture 2– Use Salon Exclusive Prep Hair to rough dry the hair, pull out a square section at the front of the head, clip to one side. Split the remaining hair into two high ponytails and add in coloured strands. Backcomb hair roughly on each one, smooth with a padded brush and fold over to create a square shape. Split the front section into three sections, back comb each one lightly. Roll first section under, second section back and third one under again, finish with Trevor Sorbie Salon Exclusive fix spray, use fingers at the sides to soften surface.

PICTURE 3- Part the hair in the middle and take out the fringe section and a small section on each side of the parting. Massively back comb all the rest of the hair. Use Trevor Sorbie Salon Exclusive MAX FIX hairspray and a hair dryer to shape and sculpt the backcombed hair. Drop down the parting section, adding in coloured pieces. Using flat irons and Salon Exclusive fix SPRAY iron in folds all the way up to the points, gather all hair leaving out two sections at the front and secure in a ponytail. Pull the fringe section back through the middle, shape and secure.

PICTURE 4- Use Trevor Sorbie Salon Exclusive prep hair to blow dry the hair, then roughly backcomb all the hair except hairline. Roll the two side sections up and the top section back. Flatten the front of the hair with a hairdryer and Salon Exclusive FIX SPRAY, place the veiled section around the shape and secure.
