The word Frankincense has been derived from the French word 'Franc', which means flourishing. It was first used as real incense after mixing with Myrrh. Ancient Egyptians used it as an offering to the Gods. Another popular use was in the form of a soothing face pack. It was also considered to ward off the evil eye. For taking out the essential oil, the plant has to go through the process of steam distillation. Deep incisions are created in the trunk of the tree and the bark is peeled off in thin strips. After many weeks, a milky juice comes out that hardens when it comes in direct contact with the air, resulting in the formation of an oleo gum resin, through which the oil is extracted using the method of steam distillation.
